Timothy Murphy
A Frontier Marksman
Timothy Murphy served among the famed Morgan’s Riflemen, a unit known for speed, precision shooting, and deadly effectiveness in the wilderness.
Unlike traditional musket troops, these men carried long rifles capable of remarkable accuracy at extended range.
Murphy became one of the best among them.
The Battle of Saratoga
During the pivotal Battle of Saratoga in 1777, British General Simon Fraser rallied his troops and threatened to stabilize the British lines.
American commanders recognized the danger.
A skilled rifleman was needed.
Murphy answered.
The Shot
Positioned high in a tree, Murphy fired at extreme distance under battlefield conditions most soldiers could barely imagine.
After several attempts…
General Fraser fell.
The British attack faltered.
The momentum shifted.
Saratoga became one of the turning points of the Revolution.
More Than a Rifleman
Murphy represented a new kind of American fighter:
- independent
- adaptable
- deadly accurate
- shaped by the frontier rather than formal military tradition
The Revolution was not won only by drilled formations.
It was also won by men who knew the forests, the rivers, and the land itself.
Reflection
Sometimes history turns not on armies…
But on one steady hand in the right moment.
Timothy Murphy’s shot echoed far beyond the battlefield.
It helped change the course of a war.
The Micky Spano Show proudly honors Timothy Murphy, Morgan’s Riflemen, as Veteran of the Day for May 7, 2026, remembering his courage, his skill, and his role in America’s fight for independence.
