MASTER SERGEANT TRAVIS E. WATKINS
UNITED STATES ARMY
KOREAN WAR

September 5, 1920 – August 31, 1950

Some heroes charge forward into history.

Others quietly give everything so others may live.

Master Sergeant Travis E. Watkins was one of those heroes.

Born in Waldo, Arkansas, Watkins served with Company H, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division during the Korean War. In the summer of 1950, United Nations forces fought desperately to halt the North Korean advance toward the Pusan Perimeter. American soldiers faced overwhelming enemy attacks, difficult terrain, and constant danger.

On August 31, 1950, Watkins’ position came under intense assault. Already seriously wounded and unable to move freely, he remained with fellow soldiers who were also wounded. As enemy forces closed in, a grenade landed among the group.

Knowing his comrades could not escape in time, Watkins made an extraordinary decision.

He pulled the grenade beneath his own body and absorbed the explosion.

His sacrifice saved the lives of the wounded soldiers around him.

For his actions, Master Sergeant Travis E. Watkins was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest award for valor.

His courage reflects the finest traditions of the United States Army and the enduring spirit of Americans who answered their nation’s call during the Korean War.

As America celebrates its 250th Anniversary, we remember Master Sergeant Travis E. Watkins and all those who placed duty, honor, and the lives of others above themselves.

“The greatest acts of courage are often those performed for others.”

The Micky Spano Radio Show proudly honors Master Sergeant Travis E. Watkins, United States Army, as America 250 Veteran of the Day for June 1, 2026.
