A Soldier in the Fight
Sergeant Leigh Ann Hester served as a Military Police soldier during the Iraq War—part of a generation of warriors operating in fast-moving, unpredictable combat environments.
She wasn’t expected to be in the kind of fight she found herself in.
But when it came… she stepped forward.
The Ambush
On March 20, 2005, her convoy near Baghdad was ambushed by enemy forces.
Gunfire erupted.
Chaos unfolded.
The convoy was under direct attack.
Hester didn’t stay behind cover.
Taking the Fight to the Enemy
- Led a team to flank the enemy position
- Closed distance under heavy fire
- Engaged insurgents at close range
- Cleared multiple enemy positions
Her actions helped break the ambush and protect her fellow soldiers.
A Historic Moment
For her bravery, Sgt. Hester was awarded the Silver Star—becoming:
