A Green Beret’s Mission

Captain Floyd James Thompson served with the United States Army Special Forces—the Green Berets—during the early years of the Vietnam War.

His mission was to train and support allied forces deep in contested territory.

It was dangerous work.

Often isolated.
Always uncertain.

Capture

On March 26, 1964, while operating near the Laotian border, Thompson’s position was overrun.

Wounded and unable to escape, he was captured.

What followed would become one of the most enduring tests of human resilience in American military history.

Nine Years of Captivity

  • Held as a prisoner of war for nearly nine years
  • Endured harsh jungle prison conditions
  • Faced isolation, malnutrition, and uncertainty
  • Had no way of knowing if he would ever return home

He became the longest-held American POW of the Vietnam War.

Strength Without Witness

There were no cameras.
No headlines.
No recognition in the moment.

Just time… and survival.

Day after day.
Year after year.

Thompson endured.

Coming Home

He was finally released in 1973, returning to a country that had changed—and to a life forever shaped by what he had endured.

Like many Vietnam veterans, the battles did not end when he came home.

But he carried on.
