Sergeant Mitchell Paige served with the 7th Marines during the brutal fighting on Guadalcanal.
Jungle warfare. Night attacks. Close combat.
This was war at its rawest.
The Line at Guadalcanal
On October 26, 1942, Paige’s unit came under a massive Japanese assault.
His entire machine gun crew was killed or wounded.
The line was collapsing.
Paige didn’t move back.
Holding Alone
- He operated multiple machine guns by himself
- Repositioned them under fire
- Fired continuously to hold off the advancing enemy
- Inspired nearby Marines to rejoin the fight
One man… holding the line until reinforcements arrived.
