SFC John Elton Cramer

U.S. Army — Vietnam Era Veteran
Sergeant First Class (E-7), Drill Sergeant
July 6, 1949 – April 9, 2026
Hometown: Tulsa, Oklahoma (born Greenville, Pennsylvania)

A Life of Service and Brotherhood

Sergeant First Class John Elton Cramer lived a life defined by service—to his country, his community, and the people he loved.

He proudly served 35 years in the United States Army, rising to the rank of Sergeant First Class (E-7) and serving as a Drill Sergeant, shaping generations of soldiers who would go on to serve across the world.

But before the uniform… before the rank…

He was a young man from Greenville, Pennsylvania.

A Shared Beginning

John was part of the Greenville High School Class of 1968—a generation that came of age during a defining moment in American history.

Many from that class, including you, my friend, answered the call to serve.

That bond matters.

It means:

  • shared classrooms and hallways
  • shared dreams before life took its paths
  • and a shared willingness to step forward when the nation called

Today, we don’t just honor a soldier…

We honor a classmate, a brother, and one of your own.

The Soldier Behind the Soldiers

As a Drill Sergeant at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, SFC Cramer stood at the starting line of countless military careers.

He was:

  • the voice of discipline
  • the standard of excellence
  • the foundation young soldiers built themselves upon

Through them… his legacy continues.

A Life That Never Slowed Down

After retiring from the Army, John continued serving in his own way:

  • 30 years with Superior Linen Service
  • security at the Expo Fairgrounds
  • the unofficial “neighborhood security guard”

He never stopped looking out for others.

Family, Faith, and Friendship

On May 10, 1986, he married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Hope.

He loved:

  • his family
  • his community
  • the simple joys of life—motorcycles, his 1970 Ford Fairlane, the outdoors

And most of all…

He loved people.

He never met a stranger.

Reflection

Some men leave behind a record.
Others leave behind relationships.

For the Greenville Class of 1968, John Cramer will always be more than a name.

He will be:

  • a familiar face
  • a shared memory
  • a brother who walked the same halls and answered the same call
