Cpl. Desmond Doss

U.S. Army — World War II
February 7, 1919 – March 23, 2006
Hometown: Lynchburg, Virginia

A Life of Conviction and Courage

Corporal Desmond Doss served as a combat medic with Company B, 1st Battalion, 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division during World War II.

Guided by his deeply held beliefs, he entered the war without carrying a weapon—choosing instead to serve as a medic, committed to saving lives on the battlefield.

The Battle at Hacksaw Ridge

In May 1945, during the Battle of Okinawa at Hacksaw Ridge, Doss’s unit faced intense enemy fire and was forced to withdraw from the escarpment.

Many wounded soldiers were left behind.

Doss stayed.

Alone on the ridge, under constant enemy fire, he moved from one wounded soldier to another—treating injuries, dragging them to safety, and lowering them down the cliff with a rope.

One by one.

He is credited with saving approximately 75 men.

Courage Without a Weapon

Doss did not carry a rifle.
He carried faith, determination, and an unbreakable commitment to his fellow soldiers.

Each time he returned into danger, he prayed quietly:

“Lord, help me get one more.”

And he did.

Again and again.

Reflection

One man. No weapon. Seventy-five lives saved.

Cpl. Doss showed the world that courage is not measured by the weapon you carry… but by the lives you are willing to save.
