First Lieutenant Travis Manion
First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps
Operation Iraqi Freedom
“If Not Me, Then Who…”
Travis Manion lived by a simple code:
If something needed to be done—
you didn’t wait.
You stepped forward.
A Naval Academy graduate and Marine officer, Manion deployed twice to Iraq, leading Marines in some of the most dangerous urban combat environments of the war.
Iraq — April 29, 2007
During a patrol in Fallujah, Manion’s unit came under enemy fire.
One of his Marines was critically wounded.
Without hesitation, Manion moved to draw enemy fire away from his team—placing himself between danger and his fellow Marines.
He engaged the enemy directly.
• Led from the front under fire
• Protected his wounded teammate
• Took the fight to the enemy to give others a chance to survive
He was killed in action.
But because of his actions—others lived.
A Leader in Every Sense
Manion didn’t lead from behind a radio.
He led from the front line.
The kind of leader who made others stronger simply by being there.
Legacy
After his passing, his family and community carried his message forward through the Travis Manion Foundation, inspiring veterans and civilians alike to live with purpose and character.
His words still echo:
Not just in battle—
but in life.
“If not me, then who…”
