“Some gave all — and their courage still echoes through the generations.”
A Hometown Hero from Kenosha
Today, mickyspano.com/ proudly recognizes Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) James Stephen Mitchell of Kenosha, Wisconsin, as our Coolbeaners Veteran of the Day — a young man whose bravery and devotion to duty remind us of what true service means.
Born June 14, 1946, in Kenosha, James grew up in a community grounded in faith, family, and patriotism. After graduating from school, he chose the path of service, answering his nation’s call during the Vietnam War.
🚁 The Call to Serve
Following flight training, CWO Mitchell became a helicopter pilot in the United States Army, assigned to the 334th Aviation Helicopter Company, 145th Aviation Battalion, 12th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade.
Flying the legendary UH-1C “Huey”, James joined the ranks of the most courageous aviators in the Vietnam conflict — those who risked everything to deliver troops, supplies, and medical evacuations through enemy fire and dense jungle terrain.
He served just two short years, but every mission reflected the very best of American heroism.
⚔️ Final Mission & Ultimate Sacrifice
On July 23, 1968, while serving in Vietnam, Chief Warrant Officer James Stephen Mitchell was killed in action. He was 22 years old.
Though his life was brief, his legacy endures. His name is forever inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. — Panel 51W, Line 42 — and on the Kenosha Area Vietnam Veterans Memorial roster in his hometown.
Each letter carved into those monuments ensures that future generations remember his courage, his sacrifice, and the price of our freedom.
