Why do we honor him
On January 8, 1968, PFC Curry was aboard a U.S. Marine Corps CH-53A helicopter (Bureau Number 153710) that went missing during an instrument flight in poor weather. The aircraft was later found crashed into mountainous terrain, and there were no survivors.
The remembrance notes list PFC Curry among the passengers lost in that crash, alongside the crew and dozens of others. It’s one of those tragedies that doesn’t come with a firefight headline, but hits just as hard: weather, terrain, duty, and a flight that never made it home.
🕯️ Reflection
Some heroes fall in the noise of battle.
Others fall in the quiet, relentless machinery of war, the missions between missions, the dangerous ordinary.
On January 8, we honor PFC Hovey Rice Curry, United States Marine Corps, and we hold space for every family that received the knock at the door and the silence that followed.
