Service to Country

Ralph Wurtz was a proud United States Air Force Vietnam Veteran, serving his country from 1960 to 1980.

That’s twenty years in uniform, spanning the buildup, peak, and aftermath of the Vietnam War. Through changing times and shifting missions, Ralph stayed on the job, part of the long, steady line that kept the Air Force flying.

He remained connected to his service long after retirement as a devoted member of American Legion Post 1619 in West Plattsburgh, New York, staying close to the veteran community and the bond that never really ends.

🏠 Life Beyond the Uniform

Ralph later made his home in Aynor, South Carolina, where he continued to live with the same grounded, straightforward style that marked his service.

He loved:

  • Golfing
  • Fishing
  • Watching old westerns
  • Drinking beer and “stuff like that”
  • Working on puzzles
  • Building model airplanes

That little phrase in his obituary — “drinking beer, and ‘stuff like that’” — feels like you can hear him saying it, with a grin and a shrug. It’s a snapshot of a man comfortable in his own skin.

Family

Ralph was the son of Frederick Wurtz and Bernice Cirak Wurtz. He is survived by:

  • his sister Deborah Amoroso
  • his daughter, Elona Sciotti
  • his so,n David Wurtz
  • four grandchildren
  • four great-grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helene Wurtz.

Final Honors

A graveside service with full military honors will be held in the spring at St. Peter’s Cemetery, where family and friends will gather to say farewell and render the honors he earned.

His obituary closes with a short quote people knew him by:

“Soo, no problem.”

That one line says a lot about the man.

🌟 Reflection

Ralph Wurtz represents the kind of Vietnam veteran whose legacy is built from:

  • two decades of faithful service,
  • a lifetime of ordinary joys,
  • and a simple, steady way of facing life: “Soo, no problem.”

These are the veterans who kept the force running, came home, found their corners of America, and lived out their days in golf swings, fishing trips, puzzle pieces, and time with family.
