Veteran of the Day — December 17, 2025

David J. Doeing

United States Army
Vietnam War Veteran

Born: June 30, 1946 – Auburn, New York
Passed: December 14, 2025 – N. Cayuga, New York

Service to Country

David J. Doeing served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, part of the generation that carried America through one of its most difficult chapters.

Coming Home & Working Life

After returning from service, David went to work at the Seneca Army Depot, continuing to support the nation’s mission on the home front.

He later built a long career in public service as a corrections officer, working at Greenhaven, Attica, and Auburn Correctional Facilities for 32 years.

That’s a lifetime of showing up to hard work that most people never see and never fully understand.

Veteran Community & Faith

David stayed connected to fellow veterans through the Walter T. Conely American Legion Post 1107 and the Auburn VFW Post 1975.

He was also a congregant of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Auburn, New York.

The Man Outside the Uniform

Those closest to David remembered him as an avid fisherman and duck hunter, someone who loved the outdoors and spent meaningful time traveling and camping with his late wife and family.

He especially enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friend Arnold “Poncho” Gratton.

🌟 Reflection

Not every Vietnam veteran’s story ends with a parade.
Some come home and spend decades doing the hard, quiet jobs that keep communities standing, raising families, showing up for fellow vets, and finding peace outdoors with a rod, a blind, and a sunrise.
