💣 A Quiet Professional on the Front Line Against ISIS
Senior Chief Petty Officer Scott Cooper Dayton was a career U.S. Navy sailor and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) technician whose entire life was built around protecting others from unseen danger.
Born in Woodbridge, Virginia, on September 30, 1974, Scott joined the Navy at 18 and reported to boot camp on February 17, 1993. He served on early tours aboard the ammunition ships USS Pyro (AE-24) and USS Flint (AE-32), and on the pre-commissioning crew of the guided missile destroyer USS Cole (DDG-67).
After sea duty and a tour training recruits, he entered the EOD program in 2002, completed dive and EOD school, and went on to serve with EOD Mobile Unit One and later EOD Mobile Unit Two, deploying multiple times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
Highly respected by his teammates, Dayton became known as a steady, courageous professional who was always willing to go downrange so others could come home.
⚔️ First American Killed in Combat in Syria
In October 2016, Senior Chief Dayton deployed to northern Syria with EOD Mobile Unit Two, supporting a forward-deployed special operations element under Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve, the coalition mission against ISIS.
On Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 2016, while conducting operations near Ayn Issa in northern Syria, he was killed by an improvised explosive device.
Senior Chief Scott C. Dayton is recognized as the first American service member killed in combat against ISIS in Syria.

On December 15, 2016, he was laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, as hundreds of family members, teammates, and fellow warriors gathered in bitter cold to pay their final respects.
His legacy lives on not only in his family and the EOD community, but also in foundations and memorials that honor his name and service.
