Veteran of The Day – 12-1-2025

Tech. Sergeant Cam Kelsch

United States Air Force
Special Tactics Tactical Air Control Party (TACP)
War in Afghanistan – Operation Freedom’s Sentinel / Resolute Support
Hometown: Ventura, California

A Quiet Professional in the Middle of the Storm

Tech. Sgt. Cam Kelsch grew up in Ventura, California, graduating from Ventura High School in 2008 before enlisting in the United States Air Force.

He chose one of the most demanding paths in the service: Special Tactics Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) — the airmen who go forward with Army special operations units, calling in airpower under fire. Assigned to the 17th Special Tactics Squadron, 24th Special Operations Wing, he trained to work side by side with U.S. Army Rangers and other elite ground forces.

In 2018, Kelsch deployed to Afghanistan with a battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment, carrying the radio, the responsibility, and the lives of his teammates on his shoulders.

“Danger Close” in the Dark

On the night of April 25, 2018, Kelsch and his Ranger teammates were conducting a raid deep in enemy territory when they were hit with a massive, coordinated ambush. Enemy fire pinned the joint force down, and one of his teammates was severely wounded and exposed.

Kelsch did not stay behind cover.

He repeatedly exposed himself to heavy fire to reach the wounded Ranger, dragging him to safety while rounds impacted all around them. During the fight, a bullet struck Kelsch directly in the chest plate of his body armor. Even after being hit, he returned to his position and continued fighting.

Over the course of roughly six hours, Kelsch controlled “danger-close” airstrikes from an AC-130 gunship and other aircraft, bringing precision fire as close as 35 meters from friendly positions. He directed dozens of 40mm and 105mm rounds, as well as 500-pound bombs, breaking the ambush and allowing the Rangers and partner forces to survive and withdraw.

His actions saved the life of his wounded teammate and prevented what would have been a catastrophic loss of American and partner forces.

Silver Star, Bronze Star with Valor

For his heroism that night, Tech. Sgt. Cam Kelsch was awarded the Silver Star Medal, the nation’s third-highest award for valor in combat, during a ceremony at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum in Pooler, Georgia, on April 9, 2019.

At the same ceremony, he also received a Bronze Star Medal with “V” device for valor for another mission during the same deployment, where he again braved enemy fire while supporting an interagency partner force in Afghanistan.

Leaders described him as a consummate professional whose courage under fire directly changed the outcome of the battle and brought his teammates home alive.

Legacy of a Modern Airman

Like many in the Special Tactics community, Kelsch is part of a generation of airmen who have spent years in combat zones quietly doing some of the most dangerous work in the U.S. military. As a TACP attached to the 75th Ranger Regiment, he stood at the intersection of ground combat and American airpower—turning training, teamwork, and courage into survival for his unit.

His story is a powerful reminder that behind many successful missions, there is often a calm voice on the radio and a brave airman under fire making the impossible calls.
