Staff Sergeant David G. Bellavia

U.S. Army — Iraq War
Born November 10, 1975 (Buffalo, New York)
Hometown: Lyndonville / Buffalo, New York

Life & Service Background

David Bellavia grew up in a working-class family in western New York, becoming the youngest of four boys. (Facebook) He graduated from Lyndonville Central High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army in July 1999. (Congressional Medal of Honor Society)

During his military service, Bellavia served with the 1st Infantry Division in the famed “Ramrods” platoon. His defining moment came on November 10, 2004, during the brutal Second Battle of Fallujah (Operation Phantom Fury) in Iraq. His squad was pinned inside a house by enemy fire. With total disregard for his own safety, he entered the room, fought through insurgents, cleared the building, and killed/neutralized multiple enemy combatants so his squad could escape. (Congressional Medal of Honor Society)

In June 2019, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, becoming the first living veteran of the Iraq War to get it. (U.S. Army)

After His Service

After leaving active duty in 2005, Bellavia moved into public life. He has spoken widely on leadership, the warrior ethos, and veterans’ issues. (Cornell University Blog Service) He has also engaged in business ventures and media appearances, turning his battlefield experience into advocacy and mentorship for other veterans.
