Staff Sergeant Rick Lee Chess, a proud son of Greenville, Pennsylvania, answered his country’s call and served with courage in the Vietnam War. As a U.S. Army Non-Commissioned Officer, he faced the dangers of combat, was wounded in action, and earned multiple decorations recognizing his bravery, devotion to duty, and exemplary service to his fellow Soldiers and his nation.
He was a member of Wassamassaw Baptist Church and a lifetime member of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team (“Sky Soldiers”), DAV, and Reynolds VFW. Rick enjoyed outdoor activities and sharing his wit and fellowship with many friends. He mostly enjoyed spending time with his wife, kids, and grandkids.
Rick was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a man of faith whose values guided his life. He was actively involved in his church community and remained closely connected to his fellow Vietnam veterans, honoring their shared sacrifices and the bonds that united them.
Today, Rick Lee Chess rests at Arlington National Cemetery among his brothers and sisters in arms. His life story—patriot, protector, family man, and faithful servant—stands as a powerful reminder of the cost of freedom and the character of those who defend it.
