Born: December 14, 1944

Drew Dennis Dix

Why Drew Dix?

Because his story is different from most Vietnam War stories.

Most people picture:

  • jungle patrols
  • helicopters
  • remote firebases

Drew Dix’s Medal of Honor action occurred during the:

Tet Offensive

in the city of Chau Phu.

This was brutal urban combat, house-to-house fighting, and civilian rescue operations during one of the most critical battles of the Vietnam War.

The Tet Offensive

On January 31, 1968, Communist forces launched surprise attacks throughout South Vietnam.

Chau Phu quickly became a battlefield.

Enemy troops seized portions of the city.

American and South Vietnamese personnel were trapped.

Civilians were caught in the middle.

Running Toward the Fight

Although not required to enter the combat zone, Dix voluntarily moved into the city.

Over the next several hours he:

  • organized local defenders
  • rescued civilians
  • evacuated American personnel
  • led assaults against enemy-held positions
  • repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire

His actions helped break enemy control of key areas and saved numerous lives.

Special Forces Leadership

What makes Drew Dix special is that he wasn’t sitting behind the front lines directing operations.

He was in the streets.

Leading.

Fighting.

Rescuing.

Inspiring others to move forward.

Reflection

Heroism is often found where others see only danger.

When chaos overtook Chau Phu, Drew Dix moved toward the sound of the guns.

Decorations

Legacy

Drew Dix remains one of the few enlisted Special Forces soldiers to receive the Medal of Honor for actions during the Vietnam War.

His story reminds us that leadership is not about rank.

It is about action.

Final Honor

Today, his name remains synonymous with courage, initiative, and service to others during one of the most difficult periods of the Vietnam War.

The Micky Spano Radio Show proudly honors Drew Dennis Dix, United States Army Special Forces, as America 250 Veteran of the Day for June 9, 2026, remembering his courage, leadership, and devotion to duty during the Tet Offensive.
