Peter C Lemon

Holding the Line

In the early hours of April 1, 1970, Sergeant Peter Lemon and his fellow soldiers were defending a remote position in Vietnam when a large enemy force launched a determined attack.

The battle erupted in darkness.

Mortars exploded.

Grenades flew into the defensive perimeter.

Enemy soldiers breached portions of the position.

The fight became hand-to-hand.

Refusing to Quit

During the attack:

  • Lemon was wounded repeatedly.
  • He continued carrying ammunition to fellow soldiers.
  • He rescued wounded comrades.
  • He fought enemy troops at close range.
  • He returned grenades thrown into friendly positions.

Despite severe injuries, he refused evacuation and continued defending the position.

His courage inspired those around him to continue the fight.

A Soldier’s Soldier

What makes Peter Lemon special is that his actions were not driven by rank or command.

He was an enlisted infantryman.

A soldier standing beside other soldiers.

When the battle reached its most desperate moments, he chose to stay in the fight.

Reflection

Sometimes heroism is not a single act.

Sometimes it is a decision made over and over again:

“I will not quit.”

Peter Lemon made that decision throughout one long night in Vietnam.

Decorations

Peter Lemon remains one of the youngest living Medal of Honor recipients from the Vietnam War and a powerful reminder of the courage displayed by American soldiers during that conflict.
