Robert T Kuroda

An American Soldier Fighting for a Nation That Questioned Him

Robert T. Kuroda was a Japanese American soldier serving in the famed:

442nd Regimental Combat Team

One of the most highly decorated units in American military history.

While many Japanese American families faced internment and suspicion at home following Pearl Harbor…

Men like Kuroda volunteered to fight for the United States in Europe. The Road Toward Germany

By 1944, American forces were pushing through:

  • France
  • the Vosges Mountains
  • and toward Germany itself.

The fighting was brutal:

  • forests
  • machine-gun nests
  • artillery
  • freezing rain
  • hidden enemy positions

The terrain turned every advance into a deadly struggle.

October 20, 1944

During combat near Bruyères, France:

  • Kuroda attacked enemy machine-gun positions under heavy fire
  • Captured enemy weapons
  • Turned a machine gun against German defenders
  • Continued fighting despite incoming fire all around him

His actions helped American forces continue advancing during one of the toughest campaigns of the European war.

Moments later, he was killed in action.

A Delayed Honor

Like many minority veterans of World War II, Kuroda’s heroism was not fully recognized immediately.

Decades later, his Distinguished Service Cross was upgraded to:

the Medal of Honor

in recognition of extraordinary valor.

Reflection

America’s strength has always come from ordinary citizens willing to fight for ideals greater than themselves.

Robert T. Kuroda fought for a nation still learning how fully American he already was.
