The China Marines
“Send the Marines”
Long before Pearl Harbor…
Long before Guadalcanal…
United States Marines were already serving in China during years of violence, instability, and growing international tension.
These Marines became known simply as:
“The China Marines”
A Nation in Turmoil
Following the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1911, China entered a long period of instability now remembered as:
- the Warlord Era
- the Chinese Civil War
- and the rise of Japanese aggression in Asia.
Cities changed hands.
Armies fought constantly.
Bandits controlled roads and rivers.
Foreign citizens and businesses often found themselves trapped in dangerous territory.
Why Americans Were There
The United States maintained military forces in China to:
- protect American citizens
- defend embassies and consulates
- safeguard international trade
- and support stability around treaty ports and the Yangtze River.
The Marines often worked alongside:
- Navy Yangtze Patrol gunboats
- embassy guards
- and international military detachments stationed in Shanghai and Beijing.
Shanghai
One of the largest Marine deployments occurred in:
Shanghai
The city became a tense crossroads of:
- refugees
- revolutionaries
- foreign diplomats
- criminal gangs
- and competing armies.
American Marines guarded:
- streets
- checkpoints
- diplomatic compounds
- rail lines
- and civilian evacuation routes.
At any moment, violence could erupt.
The Yangtze Patrol
Along the Yangtze River, Navy gunboats carried Marines through dangerous territory where:
- snipers attacked river traffic
- pirates seized vessels
- artillery battles erupted along riverbanks
- and warlords fought for control of entire provinces.
The patrols became symbols of American presence in a rapidly collapsing region.
Before World War II
The China Marines witnessed:
- the rise of Imperial Japan
- anti-foreign violence
- growing instability across Asia
- and the warning signs of a much larger war approaching.
Many of the men who served in China would later fight throughout the Pacific during World War II.
Some would become prisoners of war after the fall of Shanghai and the Philippines.
Reflection
The China Marines stood watch during the uneasy years before the world exploded into war.
They served in distant streets and rivers most Americans would never see…
Holding the line while history gathered strength around them.
Legacy
The phrase:
“China Marine”
became part of Marine Corps history and lore:
- disciplined
- adaptable
- hardened by uncertainty
- and always ready far from home.
The Micky Spano Radio Show proudly honors the United States Marines and sailors who served in China during the Warlord Era and Chinese Civil War period, remembering their vigilance, their sacrifice, and their role in the years leading toward World War II.
