A Soldier’s Journey

Staff Sergeant Roy P. Benavidez served in the United States Army as a member of the elite Special Forces during the Vietnam War.

His path to service was not easy—he overcame injury, hardship, and adversity, driven by a deep commitment to serve his country and his fellow soldiers.

Into the Fire

On May 2, 1968, near Loc Ninh, South Vietnam, a 12-man Special Forces reconnaissance team was surrounded by a large enemy force.

Hearing their distress call, SSG Benavidez boarded a helicopter and flew into the middle of the firefight.

He entered the battle armed with only a knife.

Six Hours of Courage

What followed was nearly six hours of relentless combat:

  • He moved through intense enemy fire to reach wounded soldiers
  • Administered medical aid while under constant attack
  • Carried and dragged multiple wounded men to extraction points
  • Directed air support and organized defense under overwhelming odds

He was wounded multiple times—by bullets, shrapnel, and bayonet—but refused to stop.

He continued fighting… until every surviving member of the team was evacuated.

Refusing to Die

At one point, he was believed to be dead and placed in a body bag.

As preparations were being made, he spat in a medic’s face to show he was still alive.

That’s not just survival.

That’s will.

Reflection

Some soldiers fight through pain… others redefine what pain even means.

SSG Benavidez did not quit.
