A Young Marine’s Calling
Private First Class Harold Gonsalves served with the 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division during World War II.
Like many young Americans of his time, he answered the call to serve during one of the most demanding periods in our nation’s history.
He was just 19 years old.
The Battle for Okinawa
In April 1945, during the Battle of Okinawa, Pfc. Gonsalves and his unit were engaged in fierce combat against entrenched enemy forces.
The fighting was intense, close, and unforgiving.
During the assault, an enemy grenade landed among his fellow Marines.
There was no time.
No hesitation.
Gonsalves threw himself onto the grenade… absorbing the blast and saving the lives of the Marines around him.
A Split-Second That Saved Lives

He did not step away.
