A Life of Duty and Resolve
Corporal Hiroshi Miyamura served with Company H, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division during the Korean War.
On the night of April 24–25, 1951, near Taejon-ni, Korea, his unit came under a fierce nighttime assault by enemy forces attempting to overrun their position.
Outnumbered and under intense fire, Cpl. Miyamura stood his ground.
The Fight in the Darkness
As the enemy closed in:
He moved fearlessly along his line, directing fire and reinforcing positions.
He engaged in close combat, using his rifle and bayonet to repel the attack.
He personally led counterattacks against advancing forces.
When his company was ordered to withdraw, Cpl. Miyamura made a decision that defines a soldier’s courage.
He stayed behind.
Alone.
Holding off the enemy so his fellow soldiers could escape.
Captivity and Endurance
After covering the withdrawal of his unit, Cpl. Miyamura was captured and held as a prisoner of war for more than two years.
During his captivity, his actions were so significant that his Medal of Honor award was classified to protect him from enemy retaliation.
He endured hardship, isolation, and uncertainty… and returned home with quiet strength.
