SFC Alwyn Cashe

U.S. Army — Iraq War (Operation Iraqi Freedom)
July 13, 1970 – November 8, 2005
Hometown: Oviedo, Florida

A Life of Courage and Leadership

Sergeant First Class Alwyn Cashe served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division.

On October 17, 2005, near Samarra, Iraq, his Bradley Fighting Vehicle struck an improvised explosive device and erupted into flames. The vehicle quickly became engulfed, with ammunition igniting and fire spreading rapidly.

Despite suffering severe burns, SFC Cashe exited the vehicle… then made a decision that defines what it means to lead.

He went back.

Again and again, he reentered the burning vehicle, pulling out six fellow soldiers and ensuring every member of his crew escaped the inferno.

Courage Beyond Measure

By the time he finished, SFC Cashe had suffered burns over most of his body.

When medics arrived, he refused evacuation and pain medication until all of his soldiers were treated first.

Even in his final hours, he was still putting his men before himself.

Awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously on December 16, 2021.

Reflection

“No one was left behind.”

SFC Cashe did not run from the fire.
He ran into it… until everyone else was safe.

His actions remind us that true leadership is not given by rank, but proven in moments of sacrifice.
