Hospital Corpsman Third Class (HM3) Maxton W. Soviak, U.S. Navy

Today we honor Maxton William “Max” Soviak, a United States Navy Hospital Corpsman who gave his life in service to our country during the Kabul evacuation in Afghanistan.

Name: Maxton William Soviak
Hometown: Berlin Heights, Ohio
Branch: United States Navy — Hospital Corpsman (attached to the U.S. Marine Corps)
Date of Birth: January 22, 1999
Date of Death: August 26, 2021 (Kabul, Afghanistan – Abbey Gate attack)
Posthumous Advancement: Hospital Corpsman Third Class (HM3)

Service & Sacrifice

A 2017 graduate of Edison High School, Maxton “Max” Soviak enlisted in the Navy and trained as a Hospital Corpsman. He served overseas, including an assignment in Guam, before joining the 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, California.

On August 26, 2021, while supporting Operation Allies Refuge during the evacuation of U.S. citizens and Afghan allies at Hamid Karzai International Airport, HM Soviak was killed in the suicide bombing attack at the Abbey Gate — one of 13 U.S. service members who made the ultimate sacrifice that day.

Personal Life & Legacy

Max grew up in a large and loving family as one of 13 children. He was full of energy, humor, and courage — a natural leader on and off the field. At Edison High, he played football (#27), wrestled, ran track, and earned the rank of Life Scout in the Boy Scouts.

While stationed in Guam, Max discovered new passions such as cliff diving, scuba diving, jiu-jitsu, and CrossFit. He also helped start a youth wrestling program — a reflection of his constant desire to inspire and help others.

After his passing, his family established the Corpsman Maxton W. Soviak Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to helping veterans and families “live life to the MAX.”
