First American Pilot Captured

On August 5, 1964, Everett Alvarez became the first American aviator captured during the Vietnam War.

His aircraft was shot down during the opening strikes of Operation Pierce Arrow, conducted in response to the Gulf of Tonkin attacks.


Eight and a Half Years in Captivity

Alvarez would spend 8 years and 7 months as a POW, making him one of the longest-held American prisoners of the Vietnam War.

During his imprisonment he endured:

• repeated interrogations
• years of solitary confinement
• brutal prison conditions

Despite this, he maintained his discipline and faith.


Return Home

Alvarez was released in 1973 during Operation Homecoming, along with hundreds of other American POWs.

His endurance became a powerful symbol of the resilience of American service members.


Service After the War

After returning home, Everett Alvarez continued serving the country.

He later became:

Deputy Director of the Peace Corps
Deputy Administrator of the Veterans Administration
• a leader in veterans’ advocacy
