Early Life
James Webb grew up in a military family, the son of a U.S. Air Force officer. His upbringing exposed him to the values of service and discipline from an early age.
He attended the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1968 before joining the United States Marine Corps.
Shortly after graduation, Webb deployed to Vietnam as a platoon commander.
Vietnam War Service
As a Marine infantry officer, Webb led his platoon in combat operations during some of the most intense fighting of the war.
In 1969, during a fierce engagement with enemy forces, Webb demonstrated exceptional leadership and bravery.
During the battle he:
• led his Marines in an assault against a heavily fortified enemy position
• personally engaged enemy fighters at close range
• carried a wounded Marine to safety while under fire
Despite sustaining injuries himself, Webb continued directing his Marines and ensured his men were evacuated safely.
Decorations
For his actions in combat, Captain Webb was awarded the Navy Cross, the second-highest decoration for valor in the United States military.

Service After Vietnam
