Veteran of the Day — March 22, 2026

Doris “Dorie” Miller

Mess Attendant Third Class, U.S. Navy
World War II | Pearl Harbor

A Sailor Who Stepped Into History

Doris Miller wasn’t assigned to fight.

He was a mess attendant aboard the USS West Virginia, responsible for serving meals and maintaining the ship—not manning weapons.

But on the morning of December 7, 1941, history didn’t care about job titles.

When the attack on Pearl Harbor began, chaos swept the ship. Explosions, fire, and rising water turned routine into survival within seconds.

Miller moved toward danger.

Pearl Harbor — December 7, 1941

As Japanese aircraft attacked, Miller helped carry wounded sailors to safety, including his mortally wounded captain.

Then, with no formal training on the weapon, he stepped behind a .50 caliber anti-aircraft machine gun.

And he fired.

He tracked enemy planes across the sky and engaged until the ammunition ran out.

In a moment where everything was breaking apart, he became part of the defense.

Heroic Actions

• Assisted multiple wounded sailors under heavy attack
• Moved his captain to safety during the assault
• Manned and operated a .50 caliber anti-aircraft gun without prior training
• Continued firing at enemy aircraft until ammunition was depleted

Recognition

Doris Miller was awarded the Navy Cross, becoming one of the first African American sailors to receive the honor.

His courage helped challenge barriers within the U.S. military and inspired future generations of service members.

Legacy

Doris Miller showed that heroism does not wait for permission.

It doesn’t check rank.
It doesn’t follow assignment sheets.

It rises in the moment when someone chooses to act.

From the decks of the West Virginia, he proved that extraordinary courage can come from the most unexpected places.

“When the moment came, he did not hesitate.”
