Veteran of the Day – March 5, 2026

Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker

United States Army – Vietnam War Veteran

Name: Peter Jan Schoomaker
Rank: General (Ret.)
Branch: United States Army
Born: February 12, 1946 – Detroit, Michigan
Vietnam Service: 1969–1970
Unit: U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Berets)

Vietnam War Service

Peter Schoomaker served in Vietnam as a Special Forces officer, part of the elite Green Berets. Special Forces teams operated deep in contested territory, working closely with indigenous forces and conducting reconnaissance and combat missions in dangerous environments.

Green Beret teams were small but extremely effective units, often working far from large American formations. Their missions included:

• training local forces
• counter-insurgency operations
• intelligence gathering
• direct combat against Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces

Schoomaker’s Vietnam experience shaped the leadership philosophy he would carry for the rest of his career.

Continued Service to the Nation

After Vietnam, Schoomaker remained in the Army and rose through the ranks, becoming one of the most respected Special Operations leaders in American military history.

He later commanded:

  • U.S. Army Special Operations Command (USASOC)
  • Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC)

These commands oversaw many of the nation’s most sensitive counterterrorism and special operations missions.

Chief of Staff of the Army

In 2003, during the height of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, Schoomaker was recalled from retirement by President George W. Bush and appointed the 35th Chief of Staff of the United States Army.

This made him one of the few officers in U.S. history to be brought back from retirement to lead the entire Army.

As Chief of Staff, he helped guide the Army through:

  • the early years of the Global War on Terror
  • major modernization efforts
  • expansion of Special Operations capabilities

Legacy

Gen. Schoomaker represents the generation of Vietnam veterans who came home and continued serving the country for decades.

His career bridged three major eras of American military history:

  • Vietnam War
  • Post-Cold War special operations expansion
  • The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

Final Tribute

Many Vietnam veterans returned home quietly, carrying the weight of war while continuing to serve their country and communities.

Gen. Peter Schoomaker is one of those warriors who came home, stayed in the fight, and helped lead the next generation of American soldiers.
