Lance Corporal Davin M. Green
United States Marine Corps
1st Battalion, 8th Marines, 24th Marine Amphibious Unit
Killed in Action — October 23, 1983
U.S. Marine Barracks, Beirut, Lebanon
Home of Record: [Confirmed location: Arlington National Cemetery Section 59]
HIS STORY
On October 23, 1983, a suicide truck bomb detonated outside the United States Marine Corps barracks at Beirut International Airport in Lebanon, killing 241 American service members—including Marines, sailors, and soldiers—and injuring hundreds more.
Lance Corporal Davin M. Green was among the 220 Marines killed when the blast collapsed the Marine Corps barracks, crushing barracks buildings and taking the lives of young men who had been serving as part of a multinational peacekeeping force.
These Marines were deployed to help stabilize Lebanon amid a brutal civil war and regional tensions. Many had expected to support a peace effort, not die in a terrorist bombing.
THE IMPORTANCE OF REMEMBERING
The Beirut barracks bombing remains one of the most devastating terrorist attacks against American military personnel. It prompted the United States to reevaluate overseas peacekeeping missions and underscored the risks facing service members even in “non-combat” roles.
The U.S. later held Iran accountable, with courts finding that Iran’s support for Hezbollah contributed to the attack.
LEGACY
Lance Corporal Davin M. Green was a Marine carrying out his duty overseas when terrorists struck a place he and his comrades believed would be safe.
He did not die in combat under fire.
He died serving his country amid rising danger.
His sacrifice—as part of that group of 241 fallen—is a solemn reminder of the unpredictable costs of service.
