Veteran of The Day 2-26-26

Lila C. Andrus

First Lieutenant, U.S. Army Nurse Corps
Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH)
Korean War Veteran
Hometown: Phoenix, Arizona

EARLY LIFE

Lila C. Andrus grew up in Arizona and answered the call to serve as a nurse during a time when the world once again descended into war.

She joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and deployed to Korea, where medical personnel worked under battlefield conditions that were often chaotic, primitive, and dangerous.

SERVICE IN A MASH UNIT

During the Korean War, nurses assigned to Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals (MASH) operated just miles from the front lines.

They worked:

  • in extreme cold
  • under artillery threat
  • with limited supplies
  • treating mass casualties from intense engagements

Nurses like Lt. Andrus performed lifesaving surgery assistance, triage, wound care, and emergency stabilization — often working around the clock.

Helicopters began evacuating wounded soldiers directly to MASH units during Korea, revolutionizing battlefield medicine. Survival rates improved dramatically because of the speed and skill of medical teams.

Behind every saved life was a nurse who refused to stop working.

THE QUIET COURAGE OF CARE

Unlike infantry or armor, medical service rarely carried headlines.

But courage was constant:

  • standing in operating tents while shells landed nearby
  • comforting wounded soldiers far from home
  • writing letters for men too injured to hold a pen

Nurses in Korea treated thousands of wounded Americans and allied troops. Many also suffered emotional burdens that lasted long after the war ended.

LEGACY

The Korean War was fought in trenches, skies, hills, and valleys.

It was also fought in surgical tents illuminated by bare light bulbs.

First Lieutenant Lila C. Andrus
Represented the steady hands behind the battlefield.
The calm voice amid chaos.
The healing presence where pain was greatest.

Her service reminds us that heroism is not only in combat — it is in compassion.
