Service and Sacrifice

Corporal Charles T. Compton served with the 24th Infantry Division during the Korean War, a conflict defined by brutal winters, steep terrain, and fast-moving lines. On January 3, 1951, he was captured while fighting in South Korea.

He did not make it home.

CPL Compton died while a prisoner of war on May 29, 1951.
That detail carries a particular weight. It reminds us that sacrifice isn’t only measured by the moment of impact on a battlefield, but also by the long, silent suffering that can follow capture.

Reflection

For some families, the war didn’t end with a telegram.
It stretched into uncertainty, into waiting, into years that never quite returned to normal.

Today we honor Corporal Charles T. Compton, and we remember every American service member who endured captivity in Korea, and those who never returned.
