Why we honor him
On January 10, 1968, CWO Hartwell was flying a UH-1B on a combat reconnaissance mission while protecting a medevac when the helicopter went down, killing him.
A remembrance on his Wall of Faces page recounts that the gunner helped pull personnel from the wreckage and used the pilot’s emergency radio to call for rescue, and that SGT John C. Tingley was later killed by ground fire during the extraction.
Reflection
Some heroes run toward gunfire.
Some fly into it because someone on the ground needs a lifeline.
Today, we honor CWO William Raymond Hartwell for the mission he took, the lives his flight protected, and the sacrifice that brought his name to the Wall.
