📖 Life & Service: From Naval Academy to the Battlefield
Megan McClung grew up in a family steeped in military tradition — a grandfather in the U.S. Navy, a father who served as a Marine infantry officer in Vietnam.
She attended Mission Viejo High School, where she competed as a gymnast, then went on to the U.S. Naval Academy (class of 1995). After commissioning, she served on active duty. In the Reserves — but when the Iraq War called, she volunteered: in 2005, she deployed to Iraq with the I Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF) as a Public Affairs Officer.
In 2006, just after earning her master’s degree in Criminology from Boston University, she returned to active duty and was assigned as the senior PAO in Ramadi — a dangerous, volatile area.
💔 December 6, 2006 — Final Mission, Ultimate Sacrifice
On December 6, 2006, Major McClung was escorting a group of journalists. Her Humvee was struck by a powerful roadside bomb (IED). The blast instantly killed her and two accompanying U.S. Army soldiers. She was 34 years old. (U.S. Marine Corps)
Major McClung became the first female Marine Corps officer to be killed in combat during the Iraq War, and the first woman graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy to die in action.
Her tombstone at Arlington National Cemetery bears her own mantra: “Be Bold. Be Brief. Be Gone.” — a fitting epitaph for a life that lived at full throttle in service to her country.
