🔥 Heroism Under Fire
In late September 2014, Senior Airman Dustin Temple was deployed with the 21st Special Tactics Squadron in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. During a joint operation with U.S. Army Special Forces and Afghan commandos, the team came under heavy, coordinated insurgent fire from nearly 100 enemy fighters.
When a teammate was critically wounded by a sniper, despite the danger, Temple ran across open terrain under intense fire to reach him — hauling him to safety and then volunteering, again under heavy fire, to carry that man nearly a hundred meters across unsecured ground toward a medevac helicopter.
As the battle raged, ammunition ran low. Temple twice sprinted into enemy fire to retrieve vital supplies dropped by a resupply helicopter — each time dragging crates under enemy machine-gun fire.
Over a brutal 48-hour firefight, Temple coordinated dozens of danger-close airstrikes and close air support — controlling 28 helicopters and 20 fixed-wing aircraft across 26 engagements. His actions resulted in the confirmed killing of 10 enemy fighters, eight more estimated, and the saving of over 38 friendly lives.
For his extraordinary heroism and selfless valor, Temple was awarded the Air Force Cross — the Air Force’s second-highest award for valor.
