United States Air Force
F-15E Combat Pilot • First Female Thunderbird Demonstration Pilot
Born: September 26, 1974
Hometown: Las Vegas, Nevada
✈️ A Trailblazer Who Took America’s Airpower Higher
Colonel Nicole Margaret Malachowski’s Air Force career is one of courage, grit, and barrier-breaking service. She dreamed of flying since she was a teenager, joining Civil Air Patrol at age 12 and starting Air Force Junior ROTC at 14. That early spark led to her appointment to the United States Air Force Academy, where she graduated in 1996 and began pilot training — finishing as a distinguished graduate.
Trained as an F-15E Strike Eagle combat pilot, she deployed in support of Operation Deliberate Forge and later Operation Iraqi Freedom, flying 188 combat hours in missions that supported U.S. and coalition forces on the ground. Her flying skill, leadership, and professionalism earned her some of the highest performance ratings in her squadrons.
⭐ Making History: First Woman Thunderbird Pilot
In 2005, Nicole Malachowski shattered a historic barrier when she became the first woman ever selected to fly with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, the elite aerial demonstration team. She flew the #3 Right Wing position, performing high-speed formation maneuvers watched by millions in airshows across the country.
Her Thunderbird tenure didn’t just break ceilings — it inspired generations of girls and young women to see themselves in the cockpit of America’s most advanced aircraft.
🎖️ Combat Veteran, Commander, and National Leader
After her Thunderbird assignment, Malachowski returned to operational flying and later commanded the 333rd Fighter Squadron at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. She also served as a White House Fellow and later as Executive Director for the Join Forces Initiative under the Obama Administration, advising on veteran families, caregiver support, and wounded warrior programs.
Her service continued until medical issues related to a tick-borne illness forced her retirement — a battle she courageously transformed into advocacy, resilience speaking, and leadership education.
🌟 Life After Service: A Voice of Strength and Resilience
Since leaving active duty, Col. Malachowski has become a respected national speaker on:

Her story resonates because she embodies strength through challenge — both in the air and on the ground.
