⚔️ A Living Hero Who Saved Lives at the Cost of His Own
On August 8, 2012, while serving as the Personal Security Detachment Commander for the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Captain Florent “Flo” Groberg was escorting a group of senior Army and Air Force leaders in Kunar Province, Afghanistan.
As the patrol crossed a small bridge, Groberg spotted a suspicious man moving toward the formation. His instincts — sharpened by combat and duty — kicked in instantly. He confronted the threat head-on.
That man was a suicide bomber.
Groberg tackled him, dragging him away from the formation. The bomber detonated — and Groberg was thrown into the air, sustaining catastrophic injuries to his leg, bone damage, nerve damage, and life-threatening wounds.
But his action saved the lives of multiple American officers and Afghan counterparts.
His sacrifice reduced what could have been a mass-casualty attack.
For his extraordinary heroism, Groberg received the Medal of Honor from President Barack Obama in 2015 — becoming the first foreign-born recipient from the War on Terror.
