Veteran of the Day — November 27, 2025

SPOTLIGHT: Staff Sergeant Leigh Ann Hester

U.S. Army — Iraq War (Operation Iraqi Freedom)
Born January 12, 1982 — Still living
Hometown: Bowling Green, Kentucky

⚔️ A Soldier Who Charged Into Fire

Staff Sergeant Leigh Ann Hester is one of the most remarkable combat veterans of the modern era — a woman who didn’t just serve in a war zone… she ran toward danger when others would’ve fallen back.

On March 20, 2005, while serving with the 617th Military Police Company, Kentucky Army National Guard, Hester’s convoy was ambushed near Salman Pak, Iraq. More than 30 insurgents attacked from hidden positions using rifles, RPGs, and machine guns.

Hester didn’t freeze.
She didn’t wait for orders.
She charged forward — crossing open ground under direct fire, entering a trench line filled with enemy fighters, eliminating multiple insurgents, and helping break the ambush that would have killed her entire unit.

Her courage and precision under fire saved American lives that day.

🎖️ A Historic Honor

For her heroism, Leigh Ann Hester became:

The first woman in U.S. military history to receive the Silver Star for direct combat action.

And the first woman since World War II to receive the award.

She would later continue serving as an MP, a drill sergeant, and a role model for women in the military — proving that courage in battle does not depend on gender, but on heart.

🌟 Reflection

“When your team is pinned down, you don’t wait for someone to save you. You move.”

Leigh Ann Hester is a symbol of the courage, power, and leadership of America’s women warriors — those who serve on the front lines and carry the burden of the battlefield with honor.
