A Soldier Who Wouldn’t Leave a Friend Behind

SFC Jared Christopher Monti grew up in a small New England town where service, loyalty, and grit were part of daily life. Friends recalled him as the kid who stood up for others, and the soldier who always checked on his guys before himself.

Monti enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1993 and became a Fire Support Specialist. He served in the Balkans, Korea, and multiple combat zones before deploying to Afghanistan with the 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division.

“I’m going to get him.”

On June 21, 2006, Monti’s 16-man patrol was ambushed by more than 50 Taliban fighters in the mountains near Gowardesh, Afghanistan. The firefight was violent, close-range, and overwhelming.

During the attack, one of Monti’s soldiers, Pvt. Brian Bradbury was severely wounded and lying exposed. Monti attempted to rescue him — not once… not twice… but three times — running into a deadly open killing zone under enemy fire.

On his final attempt, he was mortally wounded.

His last words, heard by his squad leader, were:

“Tell my parents I love them.”

For his extraordinary heroism and selfless devotion to his men, SFC Monti was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on September 17, 2009 — the first Army Medal of Honor recipient of the Afghanistan War.
