VETERAN OF THE DAY – STAFF SERGEANT JAMES MACKStaff Sergeant James Mack was born on September 18, 1940, in Harvey, Louisiana. He served proudly in the United States Army as an Infantryman (11B40) and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6) during his ten years of dedicated service.

Assigned to D Company, 51st Infantry, 97th Military Police Battalion, 16th MP Group, 18th MP Brigade, U.S. Army Vietnam (USARV), Staff Sergeant Mack began his tour in South Vietnam on June 28, 1967.

On August 23, 1969, at the age of 28, he was killed in action in Binh Thuan Province, South Vietnam. His death resulted from hostile ground combat, and he died outright from burn injuries. His body was recovered and returned home so his family and nation could honor his sacrifice.

Staff Sergeant James Mack’s courage and service reflect the best of America’s fighting spirit. His legacy endures through those who remember his commitment to freedom and duty.
