🇺🇸 A Hero from the Island of Guam

Today we honor Staff Sergeant Thomas Quichocho Sablan, a proud son of Guam and a brave soldier of the United States Army who gave his life in service to freedom.

Born on December 29, 1932, in Yigo, Guam, Thomas grew up with the values of family, faith, and service — principles that would guide him throughout his life and military career.

He served with distinction in Company B, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, known as the “Big Red One.” His dedication to duty and leadership in combat reflected the courage of a man who lived with purpose and honor.

⚔️ The Ultimate Sacrifice

On January 27, 1967, while leading his men in Bình Dương Province, South Vietnam, Staff Sergeant Sablan was struck by fragments from an enemy claymore mine during combat operations.

He gave his life in defense of his brothers-in-arms and the ideals of liberty and justice that America stands for. His remains were recovered, and he was laid to rest with full honors at the Guam Veterans Cemetery in Piti, Guam.

His name is forever inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall — Panel 14E, Line 88, where visitors from across the world stop to pay their respects to this island warrior who fought for freedom far from home.

👨‍👦 A Family of Service

The story of the Sablan family is one of deep sacrifice. Just a year before Thomas’s death, his brother, Antonio Quichocho Sablan, also lost his life while serving in Vietnam.

Thomas personally escorted his brother’s remains home to Guam — a moment that showed not only the heartbreak of war, but also the strength, love, and loyalty that defined his family and his people.

🕊️ Legacy of Honor

Staff Sergeant Sablan is remembered by those who knew him as a humble, faithful man — strong in spirit and proud of his heritage. He stands as a symbol of the courage of Guam’s sons and daughters who served in Vietnam and every conflict since.

He reminds us all that patriotism knows no borders — that freedom’s defenders come from every corner of America, including the beautiful island of Guam.
